“Love Your Library” video: Created for NCLA Student Ambassador Program

“Shush It Honey” video: Addresses stereotypes of librarians and my philosophy of the profession

Reflection
As a former high school librarian, I understand the value of technology and social media to teenagers. Videos that have gone viral on Youtube are one way to capture the attention of all ages. As a way to motivate my students to get involved with the North Carolina Library Association (NCLA) Student Ambassador Program, I decided to create a video portraying how important school libraries are for students. I recruited teachers, principals, students, and parents to film footage in our school library to the hit song “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.
This was such a rewarding project for me, as one of my students, Machai, was selected to be a student ambassador for NCLA.  To enter the contest, students were asked to show how much they love libraries and what effect libraries have had on their life in an essay, song, video, or poem. Machai's essay touched on how her love of books since early childhood has evolved into her passion for libraries today.  She traveled with state library leaders, advocates, and 11 other student ambassadors and their family members by bus to Washington D.C. to attend National Library Legislative Day on May 5th and 6th, 2014. While on the trip, she was able to meet with North Carolina’s state leaders in both the House of Representatives and Senate telling them why libraries are important to all of us and the future well-being of North Carolina. She was also able to meet and speak about her experiences with Senator Burr on the Capitol Steps.
When analyzing my personal feelings and philosophy of librarianship, I decided to create a project that poked fun at the stereotypes of librarians. I wanted to draw attention to the service aspect of librarianship.  I decided to rewrite lyrics to the song, “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen. Using the software program, GarageBand, I was able to record my voice over the background music of the popular hit.  Next, I planned out the scenes and locations for the video footage. This video allowed me to share my viewpoints of the library and information field and some of the misperceptions of our profession in a lighthearted and humorous way.

“Shush It Honey”
To heck with stereotypes
spectacles on a long chain
we keep our heads in the books
with worried expressions.
We don’t all wear long dresses
or pull our hair in a bun
you think you know how it is
to be a librarian.
Her glare was holding
stiff neck, sweater showing
stockings, long skirt flowing
why you gotta talk so loudly?!
Hey, I like helping, and you sure need some
so here's a reference, let’s check it honey
we’re intellectual, smart and clever
so here's your number, I'll help you find it.
Hey you just met me, and I’m a librarian
but we're all different, so shush it honey
some say we're nerdy, or quiet and lonely
but I say awesome, so check it honey
You have no clue what you need
and then I help with great speed
you gave me keywords to search,
and now we're in the stacks.
I pace the aisles and shelves
Dewey D tells me it’s here
I wasn’t sure I would find it,
but it’s on the shelf.
Cart overflowing
stockings, sweater showing
book shelves, pages blowing
Whatcha think ya readin baby?!
Hey, what you looking for? Is it fiction?
Check the catalog, is it in the system?
it’s sometimes hard to, find the right read
Hey whatcha readin, is it fiction?
Hey you just met me, and I’m a librarian
but we're all different, so shush it honey!
Some say we're nerdy, or quiet and lonely
but I say awesome, so check it honey!
Before you came into my library, I knew you
lacked some info, needed some knowledge
before you came into my library, I knew you
would need some guidance, let me help help you…
It’s hard to look through- all these book shelves
but there’s a number, I’ll help you find it!
